Basic Life Support Ambulance
Basic Life Support (BLS) Ambulances fall under the patient care ambulances category. This type of ambulance is equipped to treat patients en route. In the patient care ambulances category there are two types:
- Class B Patient Care Ambulances: These are designed to offer Basic Life Support (BLS). This is a form of ambulance transport that aims to offer initial healthcare to the patient. Staff must include, at minimum, a driver in possession of a professional ambulance transport certificate, as detailed in Royal Decree 823/2012, of 20 May, and either an assistant, nurse or doctor.
- Class C Patient Care Ambulances: These ambulances are known as Mobile ICU Ambulances and they are designed to offer an Advanced Life Service (ALS) to the patient. This class of ambulance must be staffed by, at minimum, a driver in possession of a professional ambulance transport certificate, as detailed in Royal Decree 823/2012, of 20 May, a nurse and a doctor.
Class B ambulances are prepared to provide BLS en route, offering initial healthcare and transfer of a non-critical patient to a hospital or medical centre. This type of ambulance is equipped with suitable sanitary and intervention material to address emergency care needs en route.
They normally transfer stable patients with no risk to life but who may require continuous attention by health personnel and basic care during transport.
